artistic philosophy

Body and shape are at the heart of my practice, no matter what medium or role I am working in.

I am fascinated by the tension between opposites.

My creative process is fueled by an atmosphere of collaboration and permission.

STUCK. It sticks to you.

No matter how many times you roll over to shake it off, tweak your shoulders to buck it, drag your fingers across your skin

You can’t scrape it off.

STUCK is watching you. It’s watching you watch everyone else watch you.

STUCK never knows what to do next and that indecision spreads through your veins like a single drop of ink in a clear class of water.

It’s murky. It’s messy. It’s grimy. It stings. It feeds on you and everything you can’t face. You are its home and it is your prison.

There are 1 Million ways out of the mud, but none of them lead you down an eternally clean path. So why not wallow here? Stick out this STUCK?

‘Cause STUCK sticks to you.

… And the only way to unstick it is to breathe, to stand in the center of the room, to look STUCK in the face … and to defiantly move anyway.

Sylvie Guillem

A new artist that I am inspired by. Sylvie Guillem is a French ballerina, widely considered to be one of the greatest dancers of the last century. She’s 47, and she just performed a solo concert at Lincoln Center. I mean, what?!

The following are two low-quality videos, but they’re short, and she looks like a beast in them. Enjoy.

From Don Quixote:

From William Forsythe’s “In the Middle Somewhat Elevated”:

Smisch out.

Wait. Jk. One more for the Forsythe piece:

The 10 hottest things about…

Congratulations! You have fallen into the same trap that I (and I’m sure countless other unsuspecting women) walked right into. It’s okay! Nothing is wrong with you. It seems like it might be a good idea, and it may well be for you. But, before you move forward into the land of emotional connection and sexual intimacy, here are a few thing I’d like to tell you about your date, just as a precautionary FYI:

  1. That first impression you’re getting of him being a nice guy who will have your best interests at heart? WRONG, though that is assuredly what he thinks he is. Actions speak louder than words, and anything he does will, in all likelihood, be in no way based on what you want. Which bring me to #2…
  2. He doesn’t care about your problems because he only cares about his problems. He is so self-involved that I’m surprised he has the time to interact with others at all, let alone screw them over.
  3. For how much time he spends thinking about himself and pondering his problems, he is doing absolutely nothing to fix them in any way, shape, or form. I think he thinks it adds to his appeal.
  4. But then again, he generally has problems taking responsibility for his any of his negative actions. If you want a guy who will lose all recollection of large, several hour long chunks of his nights on a consistent basis due to one too many beers, he is your dream guy.
  5. He’ll make you feel bad for him. And you’ll want to help him get better. And, that’s great because it shows that you are a caring person who worries about the well-being of others. He does not even show regard about his own well-being, and you cannot help someone like that.
  6. He will do things that are undeniably douchey that he will subsequently attempt to charm his way out of. Try not to let it work on you.
  7. Let us not forget that he is good-looking. You’ve undoubtedly noticed this, and he undoubtedly spends a lot of time thinking/relying of this fact. And, you’re probably right when you assume that he looks good naked. But, that’s about the extent of what you’d get out of that encounter.
  8. He is about 50% sincere idiocy, 50% master manipulator. You don’t want that.
  9. … about 10+ other ridiculous anecdotes that, if you are a sane person, should make you cringe and walk the other direction.
  10. He obviously is capable of hurting someone to the point where they would write something this long and nasty about him.

Lol. I feel better now.

good intentions paving co.

No amount of talking is gonna soften the fall

But, like after the rain, step out of the overhang, that’s all

It had a nice ring to in when the old opry house rang

So, with a solemn auld lang syne, signed, sealed, delivered I sang

And there is hesitation and it always remains

Concerning you, me, and the rest of the gang

And in our quiet hour, I feel I see everything

And I’m in love with the hook upon which everyone hangs

And I know you meant to show the extent to which you gave a god-dang

It ranges real hot and real cold, but I’m sold

I am home on that range

And I do hate to fold right here at the top of my game

When I’ve been trying with my whole heart and soul to stay right here in the right lane

But it can make you feel over and old

Lord, you know it’s a shame

When I only want for you to pull over and hold me til I can’t remember my own name

(I know it’s so adolescent for me to blog song lyrics, but this is like… exactly how I feel right now. For better or for worse)

attention whore: a poem

It’s really hard to exist in the world

when you feel like no one sees you

because if no one sees you,

how do you know you really exist?
